Cycle Safety Talk at Zendesk
Kudos to software company Zendesk for contacting Dublin Cycling Campaign and arranging a cycle safety talk on Thursday 30 June 2016 in its offices on #1 Grand Parade (beside Charlemont LUAS stop).
Drs. Mike McKillen and Damien Ó Tuama from Dublin Cycling Campaign and Cyclist.ie spent an hour discussing road safety and cycle safety issues with its staff, many of whom cycle for commuting (and leisure trips). The main purpose of the session was to raise the staff’s awareness of how to remain safe on the roads and be particularly conscious of the more common and serious collision types (related to the movements of heavy goods vehicles, being ‘doored’ by cars, being ‘cut off’ by left-turning motor vehicles, deep pot holes etc.). A lively Q&A session followed the talk covering issues as diverse as cycle-friendly roundabout design, avoiding ‘left-turn hooks’ by drivers, bicycle parking / avoiding bike theft, helmets and other hot topics! Mike then used his special scaled model of a road with HGVs, buses and bicycles to further illustrate the ideas.
On the facilities front, Zendesk have a (packed!) secure underground room/space for bicycles as well as a new dry room so that staff can can hang rain gear and cycle accessories. Impressively they also have a nice canteen / hang-out area complete with (free for their staff!) healthy food for breakfast and lunch…… and table tennis tables. When Dublin Cycling Campaign opens up its city centre head quarters, we might take a leaf from their books on these fronts!
A sincere thanks to Alex Constanti from Zendesk (pictured above with Mike and Damien) for organising the session and looking after us so well. Dublin Cycling Campaign also appreciates their generous donation to help our work in making Dublin a bicycle friendly city for all ages and abilities.
