Deansgrange Family Cycle

The DLR branch of the Dublin Cycling Campaign was delighted to be a part of the Deansgrange family cycle on Sept 8th 2024. The cycle was to mark the opening of the two way cycle lane along Deansgrange Road. The cycle was organised by several active travel groups, including ourselves, Bike Deansgrange and Cycling Without Age.

The cycle was led out by Cycling Without Age, and had over 250 people in attendance. The group travelled along the new bike lane on Deansgrange road before finishing by the fantastic bike pump track in Clonkeen Park where pizzas from Fellini’s pizzeria were served up to participants.

Plans for Deansgrange road were first announced in September 2020 as part of DLR County Council’s Safe Walking and Cycling Routes. These routes were titled

  • Sea to mountains

  • Mountains to Metals

  • Park to Park

Deansgrange Road was to be a central part of both the Mountains to Metals and Park to Park routes. Active travel groups, like ourselves, have campaigned relentlessly to get to this point and four years on from the initial plans were announced we are thrilled to see the bike lane open. The increase in cargo bikes seen since the last family cycle organised was also very encouraging and bodes well for a modal shift in the area.

We want to commend the council’s active travels team for delivering the project and we are thrilled to see so many people, young and old, taking advantage of the bike lane.
