Supporting the Dublin City Centre Transport Plan

On Monday 8 July 2024 hundreds of commuters and cyclists, and road users and citizens from various places, gathered outside Dublin City Hall calling for the immediate implementation of the Dublin City Centre Transport Plan.

Among the attendees were many members of Dublin Cycling Campaign. They came together to demand the full and immediate implementation of the Transport Plan which has been subject to extensive public consultation over a long period, and it has been approved by elected representatives in Dublin City Council – see details here.

Karl Stanley, Secretary of Dublin Cycling Campaign, was one of the speakers and he explained that this is a rolling plan which is not a ‘car ban’.

Thanks to the Dublin Commuter Coalition for organising the event which was supported by the following groups: Dublin Cycling Campaign, An Taisce, Irish Doctors for the Environment, the Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice, Irish Heart Foundation, IBike Dublin, The Bike Hub, A Playful City and Access4All.

Dublin Cycling Campaign was represented at a meeting yesterday (11 July) with the Chief Executive of Dublin City Council that was led by the Dublin Commuter Coalition.

We are continuing our efforts to ensure that the Dublin transport plan will be implemented in full. Together with Dublin Commuter Coalition, I Bike Dublin and Irish Doctors for the Environment, we will protest outside Brown Thomas on Grafton St at 2pm tomorrow, Saturday 13 July.

You can read a reflection on Monday’s protest from Kevin Hargaden of the Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice here. It neatly summarises the many arguments for proceeding with the plan.

Finally, we would really appreciate it if you can ask your friends to join Dublin Cycling Campaign (now officially the Local Group of Irish Cycling Campaign). It is during battles like this one that we need to build up the strength of our organisation and to bring more volunteers on board to help with the campaigning. You can join here. Thank you!
