Winter Cycling Advice

During ice and snow, Dublin Cycling Campaign has a few tips for safe cycling

Icy conditions are VERY tricky when you’re on two wheels. If there’s snow or ice on the ground your tyre grip will be drastically reduced from normal, so the risk of a fall - which can lead to minor or serious injury - is higher. The following winter cycling advice may help:

  • Minor roads and cycle paths in Dublin usually aren’t gritted, so plan your route to be along primary roads or bus lanes as much as possible.
  • Often you’re better off staying nearer the centre of the road, where other vehicles have already driven and cleared the snow.
  • Take corners slowly and carefully. Avoid sudden changes of direction. Maintain a smooth pedalling action. Slower is better overall when you’ve less grip!
  • Check your tyres: Make sure they’ve plenty of tread left and are pumped up, but note that a lower tyre pressure than usual can increase your contact area with the road surface.
  • Your braking distance will increase dramatically on icy or frosty surfaces. Adjust your speed accordingly.
  • Go very easy on your brakes, and avoid using your front brake on ice: this can result in a front wheel skid, which can easily lead to a fall.
  • Keep an eye on the weather forecast throughout the week and don’t get caught out in the cold!

Finally, if it’s really frosty or icy, it might be time to consider making your trip by walking or public transport.
