Waterford Greenway Opening - A Chance to Celebrate Cycling!
This coming Saturday 25th March sees the official opening of what may well become the jewel in Ireland’s growing Greenway cycling network! Waterford County Council have worked long and hard, together with support from community organisations, to bring the latest 45km section of segregated greenway to full realisation. The route is a wonderful amalgam of river, mountain, countryside and coast, offering the best of Irish scenery to potential visitors, with a range of potential stop-off points, to explore local towns and villages. It also sports some fantastic examples of great and spectacular engineering from the construction period in the 1870s (http://www.wsvrailway.ie/wdandlrailway.shtml). It is sure to become a mecca for cyclists from all over the country as well as visitors from outside, as it is also an important part of the European EuroVelo Route 1 Atlantic Coast cycle route ((http://www.eurovelo.com/en/eurovelos/eurovelo-1).
Cyclist.ie welcome this latest addition to Ireland’s growing necklace of cycle routes, and will be represented at the official opening ceremony in Kilmacthomas this coming Saturday. On top of that a number of Cyclist.ie members will be ‘doing’ the Greenway over the weekend, and spending some time in the Waterford area. We will be arriving from Cork & Dublin & other points around the country! And there will be mini festivals at 3 separate locations on the Greenway Route, in Waterford, Kilmacthomas and Dungarvan. Check out the link below for further information on the Opening Day - a great variety of events are sure to attract you down there!
