In spite of monsoon weather conditions on Monday night, there was a mighty turn-out for Dublin Cycling Campaign’s special meeting looking back on the ‘Velo-city’ International Cycle Planning Conference held in The Netherlands in June. Of the 25 Irish delegates who traveled to Nijmegen, 12 presented and shared their experiences in Dublin’s Central Hotel on the 14th August.

The overarching conclusion was that there was lots to learn at Velo-city Nigmegen and a very high bar was set for Velo-city Dublin taking place in 2019. By the time the conference comes around in June 2019, we really need to have a top notch Liffey Cycle Route and Fairview Cycle Route in place, together with a cycle friendly (demotorised) College Green and lots more bicycle parking about as an absolute minimum. At a national level, we want the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport to be showing serious leadership and to be dividing the transport funding pie in a way that reflects the real benefits of cycling - 10% of transport funding to go on cycling!
