Frankfurt’s Way: What Irish towns & cities can learn from the German experience in cycle advocacy

Cyclist.ie hosted a talk by Joachim Hochstein, Cycling Officer with the City of Frankfurt, in the Wood Quay Venue, Civic Offices, Dublin 8. And before the event, Dublin Cycling Campaign presented this year’s winners of the ‘Golden Pedal’ award! The talk took place during EU Mobility Week, which ran from Mon 16 to Sun 22 September. Sadly no Irish city or town subscribed to the Charter. The Goethe Institut Irland sponsored the event.

Besides being Cycling Officer for Frankfurt, Joachim has been involved since 1994 in the German ADFC (equivalent to Cyclist.ie) and is vice-chairman of the State Association Hesse for 10 years. He reported on the experience of cycling in Frankfurt and environs from the perspective of his association. As Dublin is poised to really move forwards with its cycling provision the talk was timely in the context of the launch of the NTA’s Cycle Network scheme for the GDA.
