South Dublin Update

The South Dublin sub-group of the cycling campaign had a positive meeting with the Active Travel Team in South Dublin County Council (SDCC) on 30 January 2025.

SDCC has been allocated €20 million by the NTA for Active Travel, and will supplement this with €3 million from other funding.

The cycle schemes that will be progressed in 2025 include:

  • Dodder Greenway - Blue Haven section
  • D24 final segment, Killininny Road between Knocklyon and Old Bawn
  • Castletymon Road (North)
  • Canal Loop (linking Grand Canal and Royal Canal via Griffeen).

Tenders will issues in the second half of for:

  • Templeville Road Phase 2
  • Glendown Road
  • Tallaght to Clondalkin
  • Wellington Lane to Orwell Roundabout
  • Firhouse Road - upgrade from Old Bawn Road junction up to Ballycullen Road

A contractor has been appointed for the Grand Canal Extension from 12th Lock to Hazelhatch, so we expect to see work starting on this soon.

There will be a mid-term review of the Cycle South Dublin Programme this year. We asked asked that they consider better connections for cyclists between Citywest and the City Centre, since CItywest is now home to 25,000 people.

We discussed requests we had previously made for bike lane maintenance, more bike parking and removal of kissing gates. The council have removed a number of kissing gates, including at Tymon Park / Limekiln Lane, and in Dodder Valley Park. They are removing kissing gates in any new developments. The council installed 680 Sheffield stands in 2022/2023. There is a budget for installation of further bike parking.
