Submission on National Policy on Architecture
On 13th March, Dublin Cycling Campaign made a submission to the Department Culture, Heritage and Gaeltacht to aid in the development of a new National Policy on Architecture. The quality of our built environment affects our everyday lives; it has a critical role in giving a distinctive sense of place to our cities, towns, villages and countryside.
Dublin Cycling Campaign has a strong interest in the design of public space. Our vision is to make Dublin a vibrant liveable city where people of all ages and abilities cycle. The design of public space by architects has a huge effect on who and how often people choose to walk and cycle in our urban centres.
Our submission focused on:
- How we need to balance allocating public space for transport versus place
- The effect of different modes of transport on creating vibrant urban spaces that people want to use
- How different transport planning choices affect how we allocate space in our urban areas
- Why Ireland needs a holistic approach to the design of public space, similar to the Healthy Streets Approach used in London. This approach requires multi-disciplinary teams to design streets that focus on promoting health
